Refuse and Recycling Guidelines
Effective January 1, 2011

Used Oil filters & Oil Absorbent items are banned from Wisconsin landfills as of January 1, 2011.
Electronic items are banned from Wisconsin landfills. Watch the local paper (and this web site) for information on once yearly city-wide pickup.
The city of Cuba City will be continuing its use of refuse and recycling service with Town & Country Sanitation, Boscobel, Wisconsin, 1-800-626-1915.
Pickup will be on TUESDAY
Collection in Cuba City is every TUESDAY All refuse, rubbish, and recyclable materials must be placed at the curb by 7:00 a.m. If your pickup day falls on or after a holiday, your pickup will be one day late.
All recyclable material must be separated from other household refuse and rubbish. The contractor is NOT required to pick up or remove any refuse or rubbish containing recyclable material it the recyclable material is not separated from the other refuse or rubbish. Items that are not accepted as recyclables will be left in your recycling bin and should be disposed of with your household garbage.
The recyclable items can be together and unsorted in the recycling bin. Cardboard items should be broken down (flattened) and placed in or under the recycle bin.
This program is designed to make it easy for everyone to recycle. If you are now recycling some materials with a charitable group of other organization, feel free to continue with that practice, but recycle all other materials with us.
Plastic Containers: Only containers that have the recycling #1 through #7 in the recycling symbol will be accepted. This symbol is usually found on the bottom of the container. Be sure to empty the contents, rinse the containers clean. No caps or lids. Then place them in the approved container provided by the City.
Glass Bottles and Glass Jars: All colors of glass that contained food or beverage will be accepted. All contents should be emptied, and the containers rinsed clean and placed in the approved container provided by the City. No lids.
Sharps (needles, syringes, and lancets): should not be discarded with regular household refuse. Discard containers available from Town & Country Sanitation at a monthly charge. Call 1-800-626-1915. Or for more information contact the Grant County Health Dept at (608) 723-6416.
Corrugated Cardboard, Cereal, Pop Boxes, etc: must be flattened, bundled and tied. Can be placed in or under the approved container provided by the City. Food contaminated cardboard should be discarded with regular household refuse.
Newspaper, Phone Books, Magazines, Catalogs: should be in a box or garbage bag and placed in or beside the approved container provided by the City. Keep Dry. Can be bundled or tied.
Mixed Papers: Home and office paper including photocopies, junk mail, colored paper, fax paper, school papers, file folders, envelopes, paperback books and puzzle books should be placed in a sealed clear bag and placed in the approved container provided by the City. Keep Dry.
All paper products must be contained so the wind does not blow the items around.
Tin Cans, Aerosol Cans: Tin cans should be rinsed clean. Both ends of tin cans are recyclable. Aerosol cans must be emptied. Place in the approved container provided by the City
Aluminum Cans & Foil: Aluminum cans should be rinsed clean and placed in the approved container provided by the City. Flattening is optional.
Waste Oil: should be put in a plastic jug with a screw-on cap, then placed beside the approved container provided by the City. 5 gal. jug limit.
Batteries: should NOT be discarded with regular household refuse or rubbish. Should be placed curbside next to recycling container.
The following are NON-RECYCLABLE items:
All Pyrex glass, window glass, light bulbs, mirrors, and china.
Food contaminated cardboard.
Waxed anything.
Napkins and paper cups.
Bathroom waste paper (towels, toilet paper)
Cloth, cork.
Carbon paper, Cellophane.
Grass Clippings, garden waste, leaves, brush, tree limbs.
Soiled baby diapers.
Plastic cups and film.
Hard plastic (toys, pails,etc.)
Aluminum pie pans and trays.
Medicine bottles, containers, and syringes.
All styrofoam and Melmax-type plastic, foam polystyrene packaging material.
Paint cans - call City Hall for details on pickup.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Yard Waste: may be taken directly to the City's compost site, located behind the Wastewater Treatment Plant at the South end of Lincoln Street. Place the waste in the appropriate location. DO NOT leave plastic bags at the site Empty the plastic bag and take it home with you. Only grass clippings, leaves, and garden refuse may be deposited at the compost site. Misuse of this site will result in limited hours of operation.
Small Brush and Limbs, but not trees, will be picked up by the city crew on the first Monday of each month. Brush and limbs must be placed in an orderly manner at the curb by 7:00 a.m. These items may also be taken to the city's brush pile, located behind the Waste Water Treatment Plant at the South end of Lincoln Street.
