Happy June to the citizens of Cuba City.  The weather has certainly turned to summer and the recent rains we received have enhanced the growing season.

The first topic I would like to discuss is one we rarely think about other than being part of your utility bill or if you experience trouble with your city sewer system.  The City Council Sanitation Committee recently had a meeting to discuss its Compliance Maintenance Annual Report for its current treatment facility.  Besides George Morrisey, current Director of Public Works, representatives from Town and Country Engineering attended the meeting to help with the interpretation. There are 10 quality tests that must be met and for the first time, the Cuba City wastewater treatment plant received an A grade in all 10 categories.  These categories range from Effluent Quality to Financial Management and Collections Systems.  This is great news knowing the treated water that is sent out of the plant meets the category of total safety to the environment.  This is a testament to George, Chad Bennett our main treatment facility operator, and the other city workers who maintain our A-rated wastewater treatment plant.  The Sanitation Committee is discussing holding an open house at the treatment plant in the near future.

The next item has to do with blowing grass and placing other plant materials, etc., in the gutters and streets.  The current city ordinance includes part of the following language: No person shall place or leave upon any street or alley grass cuttings, leaves, tree limbs or branches… The reason this ordinance is in place is that leaves and especially grass cuttings can flow into the city storm water systems clogging them and also releasing lawn fertilizer and weed control chemicals into the storm water which eventually ends up in our streams and rivers.  The city asks that residents be cognizant when mowing grass and raking leaves and other plant deposits to make sure these do not end up in the gutters and streets.

Southern Edge Estates is getting closer to being ready for development. All utilities are in place and the curb and gutter have been completed.  Asphalt completion and other final touches will be completed in the near future.

At its June City Council meeting, the annual cigarette and alcohol permits were approved for all the businesses and organizations selling these items in the city for the next year.  The income from these permits goes into the city budget to help defray costs for the coming year.

The next community market is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17. Please make plans to attend the market and enjoy the great food and refreshments being offered.  There is live music and great venders there to offer their wares for sale.  A big thank you to Vicktoria Richter from “Big R’s Bar” in Cuba City who coordinates the markets.

The annual Power Pull Weekend will be held at Splinter Park here in Cuba City the weekend of June 19th and 20th.  If you are a fan of truck and tractor pulling, plan on attending this great event.

Plans are quickly being finalized for the July 11 City of Presidents celebration.  For Cuba City H.S. graduates, please sign up for the all-school reunion.

Finally, congratulations to the Class of 2026.  Good luck in your future endeavors and don’t forget the communities of Cuba City, Dickeyville, and Kieler.  They are all part of shaping you to become great citizens.
